On the afternoon of August 28, 1963, with a quarter million people in attendance, Dr. Martin Luther King was working his way through the speech he’d composed with advisor Clarence Jones when everything changed. African-American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, sitting just a few yards to his left, shouted “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” Dr. King took note, paused, slid his notes on the podium to the side, and improvisationally launched into the speech that would help change the course of history.

The number of cancer survivors in the US alone exceeds 15.5 million—a figure expected to double in the coming decades. The general role of exercise for our health & wellbeing, but what about for the individual in the midst of or the tail end of the cancer journey – does it play an important role there? If so, in what ways? Why isn’t it generally emphasized as part of the treatment protocol? And what recent advancements in the research might be changing that historical trend? Today’s guest, Dr. Kristin Campbell, has spent her career diving into these and related questions. She holds a PhD in exercise physiology, a license in physical therapy and is a professor at the University of British Columbia where she holds an appointment in the Cancer Control Program. Her research focuses on the role of exercise in cancer prevention, rehabilitation and survivorship. I had an opportunity to hear her lecture in person recently and was very happy when she agreed to join us here as a guest. I have a feeling this is one of those episodes you’re going to want to share with family and friends.

Delayed gratification. When it comes to health, wellness and high performance, it’s the holy grail, right? Well, not so fast.      Back in 1970, psychologist and Stanford professor Walter Mischel (‘mishel”) performed the marshmallow study. It purported to show that children who were able to delay gratification by choosing not to eat a marshmallow when left alone in a room in order to earn 2 marshmallows went on to garner greater success across a range of areas, including school and careers. It’s been a cornerstone concept for speakers, coaches and consultants for decades. But can it go too far? Today’s guest, Dr. Jacqueline Rifkin has spent her career answering that question, studying how we manage our resources, including time, money and even experiences. Her findings – which she recently shared in a fascinating Wall Street Journal article – may not exactly align with what you’ve been taught. Maybe there is a time and a place to eat that marshmallow afterall. We’ll talk about the other side of delayed gratification, the specialness spiral and more, and I think you’ll be surprised, and perhaps encouraged, by what she has to share.

Dr. Rifkin has her PhD in Marketing from Duke University and has done extensive work in both marketing and consumer research market. She is an assistant professor of marketing at Cornell University, teaching consumer behavior at both the undergrad and graduate levels.

Today’s interview w/ authors and emergency room physicians Dr. Adaira Landry and Dr. Resa Lewiss focuses on the concept of Microskills, which are built on a singular principle: Every big goal, complicated task, healthy habit, and even what we think of as character traits can be broken down into small, learnable skills that can be practiced and incorporated in real-time. They’ll share why success does not have to mean sacrificing our own wellbeing – but rather that can be the key to success in the first place.

Dr. LANDRY is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and co-founded Write In Color, a non-profit teaching others the art and skill of writing. She lives in Boston with her three daughters and husband.

Dr. LEWISS’ resume is similarly jam-packed. Among a long list of accomplishments, she is a professor of emergency medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and hosts the Visible Voices Podcast. She lives in Philadelphia.

Combined, Drs. Landry and Lewiss have written for CNBC, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Nature, Science, Slate, STAT News, Teen Vogue, Vogue, USA Today, and the Philadelphia Inquirer, and been quoted and featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, and the Huffington Post.
