Why Health Coaching is the Most Accessible Career Pivot in Healthcare

When it comes to making a career shift, certified health and wellness coaching has one of the lowest barriers to entry in the healthcare field. You don’t need years of school or a graduate degree to become nationally certified, saving you time and money. Instead, the initial certification level requires a weekend-long, intensive course followed by independent study that you fit into your schedule. Leveling up to national certification includes additional real-time and self-paced study that builds upon the work you have already done.

Whether you’re looking to advance your current practice (physical or occupational therapy, public health, nutrition, fitness training, etc.) or you’re looking to transition from another career outside of healthcare, the path to health and wellness coaching is neither overly demanding nor financially prohibitive.

Low Barrier to Entry, but a High Standard of Care

Professional, national-board certified health coaching certification is within reach for just about anyone with the desire to help others. The path is structured, affordable, and efficient, so that you can pursue your certification while continuing to work in your regular job. But that low barrier doesn’t diminish the quality of the program or the importance of adhering to a high standard of care.

The initial weekend course is intensive and highly concentrated and requires dedicated independent study. This skills-first approach focuses on the core competencies of coaching, such as active listening, motivational interviewing, and habit formation. Laying this strong foundation allows new practitioners to begin integrating newly-learned coaching techniques into their work almost immediately–particularly useful for people already working in the wellness and healthcare industry.

This initial certification is also an important differentiator between qualified, professional wellness coaches and online social media influencers. Certification provides instant credibility backed by a research-based body of evidence and proven coaching techniques.

“As a longtime physical therapist, I began to research how a wellness coaching program might enhance the services we offer in our clinic. The Catalyst Coaching Institute immediately stood out. We had no desire to just ‘hang out a shingle’ and start coaching. With Catalyst, I found formal education from a nationally-recognized and highly accredited organization with dedication to both clients and team members alike. The Catalyst team has continued to mentor me all the way through National Board Certification and has been instrumental in the success of our wellness coaching program. It could not have been a better decision.” -David Henslee, Physical Therapist

Scaling up with National Certification Prep

The next level up is becoming nationally board certified through the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), considered the “gold standard” of wellness coaching certification. Like the initial certification, the NBHWC certification pathway involves an accessible pathway of online courses and self-paced learning, followed by a standardized qualifying exam. Board certification ensures that you meet the highest standards in knowledge, skill, and ethical conduct, further securing your clients’ trust. As a part of the Catalyst community, we even support your studying for the NBHWC board exam through three online exam prep sessions.

Advancement or Transition? Wellness Coaching Offers Both.

For PTs, OTs, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners, becoming a certified health and wellness coach is a convenient, logical option for bridging the gap between clinical advice and patient compliance through a more holistic approach. Likewise, fitness trainers and nutritionists can expand their reach by tackling the mental side of wellness and helping clients identify and overcome the roadblocks to their success.

For people coming from outside the wellness or healthcare space, becoming a certified health coach is an approachable transition from corporate life that allows them to pursue a passion for wellness without losing valuable time (and money) going back to school to earn a new degree.

“After about 20 years of physical therapy practice, I decided to start my own business combining coaching and physical therapy. Realizing I needed education in wellness coaching one of my first steps was to certify through Catalyst Coaching Institute. Its national credibility and recognition made it an easy choice. The training was very well rounded and user friendly. I was able to incorporate the coaching techniques from the get-go and when I had some questions, they were always willing to help. I’m pleased to say that my coaching business has really taken off … thanks to Catalyst for being a huge ‘catalyst’ in getting my second career jump started!” -Charlie Boeyink, PT, MPT, OCS, CWC
