How to Choose the Best NBHWC Coaching Certification for You

How to choose the best certification program

Choosing the Best NBHWC-Approved Health and Wellness Coaching Certification

“What coaching program should I choose?” This is one of the most common questions we hear. And with over 120 National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC)-approved health & wellness coaching certification programs to choose from, it’s a very good question.

Whether you’ve been a practicing health coach for a while or are a practicing clinician who would like to add health coaching to your practice, it’s important to find the right program that fits your goals. While we’d love for you to consider Catalyst Coaching Institute without a second thought, we also know that the coaching community is truly a community, and we want you to make the best choice for you and your future.

Here’s how to filter through those 120+ programs and narrow down your best options.

First off, around 20+ of those programs are internally based, meaning they’re developed for employees of a company. So, unless you work for that company, you can eliminate those.

Next, are you looking for a university or college-based program? Your answer will essentially cut the rest of the list in half. If you are interested in a university or college setting, you’ll just need to narrow down the selection by location, cost, etc.

If you’re not interested in a college setting, this narrows your scope considerably and you can start fine-tuning the rest of the list.

To start, filter out the low-hanging fruit. For example, about a third of the programs may only provide minimal information about their programs, making it hard to determine if they’re a good fit. You can cut those out right away, which whittles down the list to about three dozen.

Next, decide if you’re looking for specialities like nutrition or women’s health. There will be clear options for those paths.

When you’ve narrowed down your list to a handful of options, it’s now up to cost, credibility, scheduling, support, and complimentary resources. What’s important to you will be very different from what’s important to someone else.

Price is an obvious factor. We’ve often discovered that the lowest price isn’t always the best option. Keep in mind that your certification will be used for years. When you divide out the cost of the program over three to five years or more, it’s easier to see the value. But on the flipside, the most expensive option doesn’t always mean the best either. The key is finding the best overall value for you.

Credibility and track record are the next considerations. Can you see the instructor bios, connect with the instructors (rather than a salesperson), and can the program demonstrate a healthy track record?

Next up is scheduling. Does the schedule match up with your lifestyle and needs? For example, the Catalyst Coaching Institute program kicks off with a weekend-long training event with the entire cohort. Then we build around that with mentor coaching, exam prep, and other supplementary virtual programs that work with your schedule. Other programs may require regular weekly training over a period of months. The point is to find a schedule that you can work with.

While every program will qualify you for the exam, it’s a good idea to see what else they offer that might be good for your career and overall goals. Catalyst Coaching Institute offers complimentary exam training courses, the annual Rocky Mountain Symposium and Retreat, and ongoing Continuing Education Credits that help you continue to grow and add new skills while feeling connected to a community.

Finally, what does your gut tell you? Did you connect personally with an instructor or program representative? Do they seem interested in helping you further your career?

What you feel in your heart is the final tie breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing an NBHWC Coaching Certification

1. Why is NBHWC approval important when choosing a coaching certification?

Choosing a program approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) ensures your training meets industry standards and keeps the door open for national board certification. Programs without this approval may limit your future career opportunities.

2. What should I look for in the format of a coaching program?

Coaching programs vary widely in structure—some are fully online, while others include live classes or university-based learning. You should consider your schedule, preferred learning style, and whether you want flexibility, live interaction, or one-on-one mentoring.

3. How much does a wellness coaching certification cost?

Costs can vary significantly, and the advertised price may not include everything. It’s important to look at the total investment—tuition, materials, mentoring, and any additional fees—rather than just the base price. As an example, Catalyst Coaching offers a Certified Wellness Coach program for $2,323 and a National Board Certification program for $3,945. These are considered on the lower end of pricing for reputable, NBHWC-approved health coach certification programs.

4. Should I choose the cheapest certification program available?

Not necessarily. While cost matters, your certification is the foundation of your work in health and wellness coaching. It’s better to focus on value—what you receive in training, support, and credibility—rather than simply choosing the lowest-priced option. For example, consider if there are continuing education options, ongoing support, a strong coaching community, and other ongoing benefits offered by the program. Some programs just offer a piece of paper with little residual value while others provide resources to help you succeed in your health and wellness career over the long term.

5. How important is the reputation and culture of the program?

Very important. You’re aligning yourself with the organization long term, so consider its experience, teaching philosophy, support system, and reputation in the industry. A strong program should support you beyond graduation.

6. What’s the best way to narrow down my options?

Start by filtering for NBHWC-approved programs, then compare your top choices based on format, cost, and organizational fit. Thinking through your personal goals and preferences will help you identify the best match.
