Setting Yourself Apart: The Value of a Wellness Coach Certification for Physical Therapists

Setting Yourself Apart

Looking to further your career as a physical therapist?  A wellness coach certification may be a perfect next step.

If you’re already a practicing physical therapist, you know that it’s a solid career. With an aging Baby Boomer generation, your skills are valuable and sought-after–and there is plenty of room for growth.

Of course, there are also a lot of other practicing physical therapists across the U.S., and competition for new clients can be fierce. You may be asking yourself, ‘What can I do to set myself apart?”

Add a certification

Becoming a Certified Wellness Coach (CWC) can help you take your expertise to the next level. For many PTs, it’s a natural fit, as it likely aligns with your overall philosophy of health and wellness. By taking the time to obtain a wellness coach certification, you’ll be receiving comprehensive training on the latest coaching techniques and tools. Chances are, you’re already discussing healthy lifestyle practices with your clients on an informal level. What if, instead of “chatting” about these key areas, you had the expertise to fully engage them in making actual positive changes? As a physical therapist who is also a CWC, you’ll be equipped with communication tools to enhance your knowledge base and the ability to draw out key elements with your clients, allowing you to make the most of your time together.

Become the big-picture expert

There’s a difference between being knowledgeable and being certified. Your employer and your clients are mostly likely very confident in your skills as a physical therapist. You may also be confident in your knowledge of other areas of health and wellness, but your credibility can be further solidified with a CWC certification under your belt. You’ll stand out to referring physicians who know many of their patients could benefit. That differentiation is not lost on current or future employers looking for a physical therapist who brings unique skills and knowledge to the table. In addition, you’ll earn more confidence from existing or new clients in the knowledge that you’re able to provide expert advice in areas beyond the lens of physical therapy.

Earn CEUs

Another advantage of becoming a Certified Wellness Coach comes from the Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) earned from programs like ours. Catalyst’s certification programs are currently accredited for 27-30 contact hours. The Catalyst CWC certification is the only wellness coach certification approved by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapists (FSBPT) on a national level, which currently covers 30 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Catalyst’s certification is approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), allowing you to sit for the national board exam if desired. We’re also approved/accredited by many other top-tier credentialing agencies, including the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA), and the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT).
